Forecast for Tuesday, September 4, 2012

Thunderstorms will be possible today for portions of the Northern Plains, Northeast, and Southeast. Below are the forecast maps for today.

Strong daytime heating and moisture advection ahead of a low in Minnesota will allow for the potential for thunderstorms this afternoon. As thunderstorms develop, hail to 2″ and damaging winds will be the main threats, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Across the Northeast, there is some cloud cover around, however, despite this cloud cover, some destabilization is likely. In addition to this daytime heating, southerly winds will advect moisture northward. If thunderstorms are able to develop, damaging winds will be the main threat, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Despite the current activity along the Northern Gulf Coast, there will be some redevelopment later this afternoon as the atmosphere destabilizes again. The strongest destabilization will occur in Southeastern Louisiana and Southern Mississippi, where the cloud cover has cleared. Damaging winds will be the main threat with these storms.
