Forecast for Tuesday, July 3, 2012

Today’s severe weather potential will mainly be confined to the Northern Plains and Great Lakes. Below are the forecast maps for today.

Thunderstorms will be possible over portions of the Northern Rockies in response to an upper level trough over portions of the Pacific Northwest, and Southwestern Canada. The forcing from this trough, moisture advection, and daytime heating will allow the development of thunderstorms in potions of the Northern Rockies and North Dakota. Hail to 1″, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes will be possible with these storms.

The other area for concern will be across the Great Lakes where current activity may begin to reintensify due to daytime heating. Hail to 1″ and damaging winds will be the main threats with these storms. The damaging wind potential will come from the possibility for bow echoes as the atmosphere further destabilizes.
