Thunderstorms will be possible today for portions of the Northern Plains and the Appalachians. Below is a look at the forecast maps for today.
The first area of thunderstorms will be across portions of the Northern Plains ahead of a cold front and an intensifying lee trough. Daytime heating and northward moisture advection will allow for destabilization through the early afternoon. As thunderstorms develop, hail to 1″ and damaging winds will be the primary threats, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
Another area of thunderstorm potential will be across portions of the Appalachians due to a cold pool from this morning’s storms. Daytime heating will allow for a very unstable atmosphere with CAPE values in excess of 3000 J/kg. As storms develop, hail to 1″ and damaging winds will be the main concerns.
