Forecast for Thursday, August 2, 2012

A shortwave trough over portions of Canada will bring a chance for thunderstorms across the Northern High Plains. Below are the forecast maps for today.

The aforementioned trough is currently situated across portions of British Columbia and Alberta. Through the day, this trough will move southeast toward the Northern Rockies along with the attendant cold front at the surface. Daytime heating and increasing moisture will allow for destabilization of the atmosphere. As thunderstorms begin to develop, hail to 1″ and damaging winds will be the main threats. As the trough moves, midlevel shear will also increase and thus an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
