Forecast for Thursday, August 16, 2012

A cold front across the Plains will bring a chance for thunderstorms to portions of the Plains and Ohio River Valley. Below are the forecast maps for today.

Thunderstorms will likely develop across portions of the Plains through the Great Lakes this afternoon as daytime heating destabilizes the atmosphere. South of the front, southerly winds will advect moisture northward, further destabilizing the atmosphere. As thunderstorms begin to develop, hail to 2″ and damaging winds will be the main threats. Some supercells will be possible in association with an upper level jet streak. Even though there is the potential for supercells, the tornado potential is very low.
