Forecast for Friday, September 7, 2012

Thunderstorms are possible for portions of the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys today. Here are today’s forecast maps.

A cold front associated with a low over the Central Plains will move across portions of the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys today. Ahead of the front, copious amounts of moisture as indicated by dewpoints near 70 and high precipitable water values will be present. Ascent ahead of the front will be sufficient for the development of thunderstorms later this afternoon. As thunderstorms develop, hail to 2″ and damaging winds will be the main threats. Where the precipitable water values are higher, the hail potential will decrease, but the damaging wind potential will increase. An isolated tornado risk cannot be ruled out ahead of the front where the shear is stronger.
