Forecast for Friday, October 12, 2012

Severe weather is possible today across portions of the Southern High Plains. Below are the forecast graphics for today.

This morning’s soundings from the Southern High Plains indicate a great deal of shear and instability. The MAF sounding, in particular, indicates a shallow EML layer, which will likely be mixed out due to daytime heating. This will add to the instability and the trough over the Southwestern US will provide the lift for thunderstorm development. As thunderstorms develop, hail to 1″, damaging winds, and tornadoes will be possible, however, if cells are able to become supercellular, there will be the potential for larger hail.
