Forecast for Friday, July 20, 2012

There will be three main areas for thunderstorm potential today. Below are the forecast maps for today.

Thunderstorms will be possible for portions of the Pacific Northwest ahead of an upper level trough. This trough will move northwest through the day. Ahead of the trough, there is a great deal of instability and will increase through the day. As thunderstorms develop, hail to 1″ and damaging winds will be the main threats. Isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

Across the Northern Plains, thunderstorms will be possible ahead of a cold front currently moving across the Dakotas. Hail to 1″ and damaging winds will be the main threats, but an isolated tornado will also be possible.

A cold front over the Southeast will bring a chance for thunderstorms across portions of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The primary concern here will be damaging winds, but hail to 2″ will also be possible with these storms.
