Forecast for Friday, August 3, 2012

Thunderstorms are possible for portions of the Northern Plains and Southeast today. Below are the forecast maps for today.

A cold front across the Northern Plains will be the focal point for thunderstorm development across portions of the Dakotas and Minnesota today. Moisture is surging northward due to southerly winds. This moisture, combined with daytime heating will allow for the development of thunderstorms this afternoon. Hail to 1.5″ and damaging winds will be possible, but isolated tornadoes ahead of the cold front cannot be ruled out.

Another cold front across the Southeast will give portions of Mississippi and Alabama a chance for thunderstorms as well. Main threats will be hail and damaging winds, however, the hail potential may be mitigated somewhat by high Precipitable Water content. The high PW content may increase the potential for wet microbursts.
